Identifying the stressors during the holidays can make it easier to deal with them so that you can reduce your stress levels.
Here are a few that may affect you.
Too Many Activities
Stress can be triggered by extra responsibilities and expectations. You want to make your holidays the best they can be. There is a lot to do if you have people coming during festive times, such as shopping, cleaning, cooking, making sure you have all the family traditions right, and entertaining your visitors with fun activities so they feel comfortable and won’t get bored… it seems never-ending.
Finding the time to get all things done may seem impossible, and you end up becoming more stressed because of your unrealistic expectations.
If your holidays are where you are traveling to somewhere new, you may again become stressed because of all the activities you want to fit in. You may end up organizing and paying for too many activities without having the time to enjoy them all.
Feeling Fat and Overweight
Attending parties and other yummy activities can lead to excessive eating and drinking. All those tasty treats and glasses of your favorite alcoholic drink or beverage. At the time of indulgence, there is often no thought to the end of holiday consequences. They may cause lasting stress because of added weight gain.
Financial Demands
If you can’t afford your holidays or time with family and friends, it can be a huge financial burden. Many people find their stress levels increase while preparing a holiday for their family due to a lack of money. If it all has to go on the credit card it becomes even more stressful knowing that the holiday isn’t even prepaid.
Work out a holiday budget and stick to it. Don’t join in on an activity if you can’t afford to pay for it. There are plenty of activities you can do while on holiday that are absolutely free. You just might have to look a little harder.
Family Issues
Holidays bring pressure to participate in celebrations with family, and if you are working and can’t get enough time off, it can be stressful as it can cause relationship problems.
If the holidays are set for all members of the family to get together, there can be problems within families where there is too much togetherness. This can put a strain on relatives or cause sibling squabbles because of changes in interests and differences in opinions and attitudes.
Alternatively, as the holidays approach, this can be stressful for those people who have lost loved ones. They want togetherness, yet feel alone. Their loneliness is more pronounced because they have to rely on people close to them for support so they don’t feel so lost and lonely, yet they may not be able to come.
Feeling Sick
For many people, the holidays bring on pain and sickness. It’s as if the body is now taking time for itself and letting your mind know how it’s feeling. Sick, tired, and aching all over. Being overworked and stressed can weaken your immune system. So you need to take care of yourself before and during your holidays.
