Physically Exhausted and Stressed
If you don’t allow time for yourself you can feel overwhelmed and burned out. This can cause you to feel physically exhausted and stressed. Spending long hours working or consistently taking care of family members can leave you with less time for yourself.
You can feel as though something is missing in your life. It is empty and void of anything joyful. Some people have the freedom to spend their lives happily with family and do what they want.
Unfortunately, others have to deal with more responsibilities and work than ever before. It is part of our nature to have goals we want to obtain in our life. It’s what gives our life purpose.
If we feel like we have set ourselves up for not being able to get what we want or do what we want in our life, it begins to feel empty. That’s when we may think what is the point of doing anything.
We need to find a way to reduce the stress in our lives so that we can do what we want to do when we feel like doing it. We need to do the things that bring us joy, instead of doing everything that doesn’t bring us anything but toil and associated resentment.
If we don’t get enough sleep or rest it is detrimental to our physical and emotional health. Sleep is strongly connected to our emotions, so not enough sleep can make us more emotionally vulnerable and variable.
Not getting enough rest leads to emotional and mental burnout, which ultimately results in feeling empty, and living with no purpose. If we do not give ourselves time to pause, we tend to forget our ‘why.’ It is the reason behind everything we do. Our ‘why’ gives us meaning in our life.
Resting and reflecting on our journey enables us to appreciate what we have achieved. If you can see the reason for your feelings of emptiness stems from giving everything of yourself to others, it’s time to pause, reflect and start making time for yourself.
Grief, Loneliness, and Depression
Many of us have experienced feelings of emptiness and loneliness due to feeling unloved or losing someone in our life. Feeling empty can feel as if the world is crashing all around you.
Nothing is going right. Your mind may be full of negative thoughts, such as, ‘Am I not worthy of being loved?’ or ‘Will things ever get better?’ Different life events or circumstances can trigger feelings of sadness or emptiness.
For instance, if a person is dealing with a hostile work environment, their perceptions about the world might affect others around them, either directly or indirectly.
Other significant life events, such as dealing with death, divorce, or loss, can also make us feel emotionally bereft as if there is a gaping hole in our existence that we cannot seem to fill.
The difference between how people feel about the situation and how they perceive it can considerably impact their emotional health. Some people can deal with negative emotions better than others, and some are more attuned to their emotional needs, while others may take more time.
Feeling Lost
Feeling empty can also mean you have lost meaning in your life. You could be bored with how you live your life. Are you doing the same things day in and day out? Are you bored because you have nothing to do except sit around all day?
Is your routine void of fun? If so, that could be the reason for your feelings of emptiness. Going through life without a purpose and meaning is like traveling an unknown route without a map.
Not knowing where to go, what to do next, or simply doing the same things every day can make you feel lost. It is the same as walking a road with no clear end in sight.
